Clinical Consultation and Supervision

At Innovative Counselling Solutions, Inc., we provide Clinical Supervision for counselling/psychotherapy and psychology students completing internship placements, as well as Case Consultation for mental health professionals.

Clinical Supervision is provided by Dr. Prince Oteng-Boateng an Approved Supervisor with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), a Registered Marriage and Family Therapist and Supervisor with the Canadian Association for Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT), an Approved Clinical Supervisor with the Centre for Credentialing and Education (CCE), a Provisional Psychologist (with specialization in Clinical Neuropsychology) registered with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP), a Certified Clinical Supervisor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and a Certified Professional Counselling Supervisor with the Professional Association of Christian Counsellors and Psychotherapists (PACCP). Dr. Oteng-Boateng has provided supervision for interns and other therapists since 2015.

MY PHILOSOPHY OF SUPERVISION

Supervision is a time for trainees and new therapists to adopt an attitude of self-discovery, practice, and development. The consistent mentoring, teaching, and supervision by a more seasoned therapist and supervisor may provide the critical nurturing, motivation, and inspiration a beginning trainee or new therapist may need in order to succeed in the profession. Supervision and guidance for trainees is a necessary and critical aspect of not only protecting the public, but also in guiding a newer therapist’s skill development, professional credibility, and their overall confidence level as a clinician.

The content of supervision will highlight the development of systemic case conceptualization and guidance with session and treatment process. Beyond the systemic/relational perspective, I am open to working with Supervisees from different theoretical modalities. Professionally I pull from a variety of clinical viewpoints depending on a client’s world view and presenting concerns, specializing in Bowenian Systems Theory, Contextual Therapy, Strategic Family Therapy, Structural Family Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Gottman Methods Therapy. As your Supervisor, I will also address the influence of cultural diversity, gender, and spirituality on cases and a Supervisee’s developmental process as a therapist. Ethics will always be held to a high standard, with ongoing consideration and review to ensure Supervisees have an emergent understanding of professional codes of ethics governing therapeutic practice.

It is important you know that, similar to therapy, supervision can have benefits and risks. Potential risks might include being exposed to new or difficult clinical orientations and interventions, as well as different levels of comfort around exploring person-of-the-therapist issues, and Safe and Effective Use of Self (SEUS). It is my intention we will establish open communication and ongoing thoughtful dialogue concerning contextual matters related to the development of one’s professional self in concert with a deepening comprehension of personal self.

In order to appropriately support students in various programs, with differing specialties, and serving distinctive populations, I have become well-versed in multiple modalities and have prioritized my own professional development outside of my clinical practice. I am passionate about empowering interns and new therapists to discover a strategic professional identity, while supporting them to meet the unique mental health care needs of their clients.

What is the difference between Clinical Consultation and Supervision?

Group Clinical Case Consultation is generally short-term, case specific, and used to provide feedback, resources, and different viewpoints as you work with your clients. Essentially, it is a fresh set of eyes helping you discover new ways to work through a concern, or to ascertain areas for future training. I provide case consultation in the following areas:

-Couples Counselling and relationship concerns

-Individual Counselling

-Christian/Faith Based counselling

-Communication issues, including boundary setting and assertiveness

-Depression and Anxiety Management

-Addictions

Clinical Supervision is a longer-term, on-going relationship and is more exploratory and self-reflective in nature. The focus is on you, your experiences in session, and areas for clinical growth.
